KENOSHA, WI
Our resident turf expert, Todd Smith, PhD, PE, LEED AP, worked diligently in his home state of Wisconsin on the renovation of Historic Simmons Field. The field is the home stadium for the Kenosha Kingfish, a Northwoods League College All-Stars summer baseball team, and is also used by local high school and college teams and for special events like concerts with a stage in the outfield.
The City of Kenosha partnered and cost-shared with the new Kenosha Kingfish team owners, Let’s Play Two, LLC, to provide these upgrades with R&R as essentially the Owner’s Expert on baseball-specific design and options for:
PHASE 1:
Upgrading the field drainage and grading
Moved make-shift bullpens in the warning track along 1st and 3rd base to dedicated, fenced-in bullpens NOT in the field of play.
Converted the entire game field, base paths, and pitcher’s mound to synthetic turf
Replaced all field-of-play perimeter fencing
PHASE 2:
Removed backstop and sideline net posts and installed a cabled backstop netting system with poles and cables from behind the press box and ends of stands—no poles between fans and the game.
Upgrade the old HID lighting and infrastructure to state-of-the-art LED lighting.
Replaced the scoreboard with a retro-looking baseball-specific board about 4 times the size of the original one.
